Hi, I’m Laura Flynn. I’m a registered psychologist who’s passionate about helping others through my profession.

Becoming a psychologist was a very natural fit for me as it combined my love of helping others with my love of psychology. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I volunteered extensively in Canada and briefly abroad. I also lived and worked overseas in China and St. Lucia. These experiences further increased my compassion for working with others and broadened my view of the human condition and experience.

I completed my Bachelor of Science with Advanced Major in Psychology degree at St. Francis Xavier University, Master of Education in Counselling Psychology degree at the University of Lethbridge, and psychology residency at the Haskayne Learning Centre for Graduate and Post-graduate Counselling Studies at Calgary Counselling Centre.

My work as a psychologist draws upon a wide array of experience, which includes: private practice, a not-for-profit counselling agency, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) agency, a school for at-risk youth, a university telephone mental health line, and a health region mental health clinic. Across these experiences I worked with adults, adolescents, and children.

Working as a psychologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland brings me joy everyday. I work in a client-centred way, with my clients’ goals guiding my therapeutic approach. As such, we work as a team. I endeavour daily to have my clients feel a safe, comforting and secure therapist-client relationship. Within these foundational values, I use a variety of psychotherapies, and tailor use to each individual. The therapies I use most include: Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and Family-Based Therapy (FBT).

Today I predominantly see adults and older adolescents for individual or family therapy. Whether concerns are seemingly large or minor by my clients’ standards, I am happy to help. Some concerns I most commonly work with include, but are not limited to: anxiety, worry, phobias, panic attacks, depression, stress, relationship challenges/issues, low self-esteem, grief, emotional challenges, decision-making, addiction, family challenges/issues, coping and adjustment.

If you or a loved one wish to see me or one of my colleagues at Mind Matters Psychological Services we look forward to hearing from you!
